PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man had been released on bail from the Clallam County jail by Saturday after he was booked for investigation of driving under the influence when his pickup ended up tipped over in a ditch at the side of Black Diamond Road on Friday.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Ley said Don Botnen, 33, was headed north in his 1991 Toyota pickup truck at about 4:30 p.m. Friday in the 800 block of Black Diamond Road when he moved to pass an unloaded log truck backing into a driveway on the west side of the road.
The cab of the logging truck was partially in the northbound lane, Ley said, and Botnen moved to pass it on the right, squeezing in between the truck cab and a mailbox.
Boten made it past the logging truck without touching it but clipped the mailbox with the passenger-side rear-view mirror of his pickup truck, Ley said.
The pickup truck then swerved to the east side of the road, Ley said, and went partway up a roadside embankment, just reaching the top before tipping over on its passenger side.
Ley said witnesses told deputies that beer had been thrown into the nearby bushes and that they saw beer near the truck.
Botnen’s pickup truck was impounded, Ley said.
