A long stretch of dry summer weeks has surrendered to wet weather across the North Olympic Peninsula, and forecasters expect to see more rainfall dampening the region this week.
Recorded rainfall Saturday and Sunday ranged from at least an inch at Quileute Airport near Forks to at least 0.22 of an inch at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Port Townsend.
Despite the newfound precipitation, firefighting officials on Sunday warned that a burn ban is still in effect throughout Clallam and Jefferson counties.
It was as if fall stormed in Saturday on dark thunderclouds, pelting Olympic National Park with a series of lightning strikes that ignited at least four small fires.
National Park Service officials monitored fires by air on Sunday, an Olympic park fire management official said.
