GARDINER — A Vashon Island woman died in a two-car head-on crash on U.S. Highway 101 near milepost 278 Tuesday afternoon.
But passers-by are being credited with saving the life of the driver of a second vehicle involved in the crash after it burst into flames.
Patricia B. Britz, 67, was in the process of moving from Vashon Island to Port Angeles when her vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a pick-up truck head-on, Washington State Patrol troopers said.
Britz was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 4 p.m.
Patrick A. Chadwick, 66, of Sequim, survived the crash and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
A Harborview nursing supervisor said late Tuesday that Chadwick was in serious condition.
