With winds of up to 65 mph expected across the North Olympic Peninsula this afternoon, Port Angeles Fire Chief Dan McKeen advises people to take precautions against potential hazards.
He recommends that people remain indoors and not drive during the storm unless it is absolutely necessary.
People should anchor outdoor objects such as garbage cans to prevent them from blowing away.
Here are more tips on what to do if power goes out:
* If you have electric garage doors, locate the manual override to prevent the doors from opening in power surges.
* Intersections controlled by traffic lights should be treated as four-way stops.
* Turn off stoves, ovens and other appliances during a power outage so they don’t come back on unexpectedly when power is restored.
* Keep all refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Items in the freezer can stay frozen up to two days if the door is not opened, McKeen said.
* When using candles, kerosene heaters or other light or heat sources, keep them away from anything combustible; use items designed for indoors and provide proper ventilation.
