The nasty New Year’s weather that greeted the West End of the North Olympic Peninsula is over, but another front is expected to pass through Tuesday.
Powerful gusts of wind from the east and powerful waves Sunday damaged homes and resorts along the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
There were no reports of injuries.
Pat Ness, the owner of Chito Beach Resort in Clallam Bay, and Arlen Olson of Olson’s Resort in Sekiu, reported property damage from coastal flooding.
Ness said she had to evacuate guests from a cabin when logs started brushing up against it.
“When the logs started hitting their deck, we figured we’d better get them out of there,” Ness said.
“The lucky thing is no one was hurt. . . . That’s the New Year’s blessing.”
Both Ness and Olson said the damage — mainly washouts of land — could be repaired, but lamented their feelings of helplessness while watching the storm.
Ness said it was the worst storm she’s seen in her 10 years on the North Olympic Peninsula.
The Port Angeles area also had severe winds, at one point, according to an eyewitness, causing the ferry MV Coho to repeat a docking in Port Angeles.
