Peninsula: Storm to boost snow on Hurricane Ridge

HURRICANE RIDGE — Let it snow (today)! Let it snow (tonight)! Let it snow (Tuesday night)!

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Olympic Mountains early this week.

The National Weather Service predicts high winds and snow accumulation of 6 to 12 inches at Hurricane Ridge today on top of an equal amount that was expected Sunday night.

As for daylight Tuesday, the forecast for the ridge is for partly cloudy conditions that will change to rain on Wednesday, but snow showers should return Wednesday night and Thursday.

It will arrive in time for Friday’s start of the Hurricane Ridge winter schedule (see accompanying article). Snow is forecast above 3,500 feet Friday.

Hurricane Ridge stands 5,500 feet above sea level.

On the Pacific Coast and Strait of Juan de Fuca, overnight winds of up to 60 mph will drop to 20-30 mph today. Winds in Port Angeles and Forks were not expected to exceed 30 mph.

Storm watches will remain in effect along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Admiralty Inlet through this afternoon. Wind waves of 8 feet will subside to 5 feet as rain turns to showers.

Meanwhile, rain will continue in lowland Clallam and Jefferson counties with a high wind watch in effect for Hood Canal. The rains should continue at least through Thursday.
