Jefferson and Clallam County seniors on fixed incomes can get fresh, locally-grown veggies through the summer.
The bags of fresh produce from Dungeness-based Nash’s Organic Produce and Collinwood Farms in Port Townsend are being distributed at community centers across the North Olympic Peninsula.
The cost per bag: $10.
The effort is due to a five-year-old program offered through Olympic Community Action Program’s Senior Nutrition Program.
“We are looking at serving approximately 900 clients in the two counties,” said Kathy Crowley, the agency’s Senior Nutrition Program manager.
“What we’re trying to do is purchase local produce,” she said.
The bags can include an assortment of spinach, zucchini, squash, chard, dill, lettuce, radishes, globe artichokes, kale, fava beans, apples, grapes and strawberries.
The fresh produce has been available since Wednesday at Peninsula-wide community centers.
Seniors can pick them up during regular weekly Senior Nutrition meal hours throughout the summer months.
