Thursday’s crash of a Navy jet southeast of Sappho was the fourth Whidbey Island-based EA-6B Prowler to impact on the North Olympic Peninsula in 20 years and the third to crash near Forks.
The other Prowler crashes on the North Olympic Peninsula include:
* On Aug. 19, 1981, three Navy fliers parachuted from a Prowler before their jet crashed in downed timber about 13 miles south of Forks.
* A second Prowler crashed Dec. 13, 1984, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 101 and Diamond Point Road, near Blyn.
* On March 19, 1992, a Prowler flying on a routine mid-day training mission crashed in heavy timber just north of Kalaloch, in Jefferson County, about 30 miles south of Forks.
