PENINSULA PREP RESULTS: Chimacum bats wake up, shut out Vashon

VASHON ISLAND — It looks like the Chimacum Cowboys finally found those bats.

Bad news for the rest of the Nisqually League.

Chimacum blasted four home runs, two coming from junior Landon Cray, on its way to a 14-0 victory over Vashon Island in Nisqually baseball action Friday afternoon.

The Cowboys (2-0 in league, 5-1 overall) hit nine extra-base hits and 18 hits total as they broke out of a mini-slump that dogged them early on this season.

“We just hit the ball well today,” Chimacum coach Jim Dunn said. “It was good to see.

“The hitting has kind of been lagging a little bit, but that was something not to worry about because these guys are very good hitters.

“It’s just a matter of them finding a groove and going for it.”

Cray had already found that groove early on this year, having already hit three homers going into Friday’s game.

After knocking two more out of the yard against Vashon, the reigning Nisqually League MVP tied the single-season school record held by early 1990s graduate David Anderson.

Also hitting bombs for the Cowboys were Devin Manix and Lucas Dukek. Austin McConnell got his first four hits of the season, going 4-for-4.

Quinn Eldridge earned the win on the mound, going all five innings for a shutout in the mercy-rule win.

Next up for the Cowboys is a nonleague home game against Forks.
