OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Superintendent David Morris announced Thursday he will leave his post this month for a job in Africa as Peace Corps country director for Zambia.
Morris will begin a 4-week orientation program Jan. 27 and will move to Lusaka, Zambia’s capital city, when the program is complete.
Morris, 61, said Thursday he accepted the new position with mixed emotions.
“Serving as superintendent of Olympic National Park has been a tremendous privilege and has offered many challenges,” he said. “Leaving is difficult, but Olympic has a great staff, and I’m confident that the park is headed in the right direction.”
Morris said National Park Service officials are deciding who will act as Olympic National Park superintendent when he leaves.
“I recommended Deputy Superintendent Sue McGill to act as superintendent,” he said.
Details about who will serve as superintendent and the timeline for finding a replacement will be announced later.
Morris has served as Olympic National Park superintendent since November 1994.
