SHINE — You don’t want to be here if you’re trying to get there from here.
The Hood Canal Bridge closed at 8 p.m. Sunday, leaving motorists to take a ferry, drive around the fjord that splits the North Olympic Peninsula from the Kitsap Peninsula, charter a bus or an airplane, or wait 80 hours for the bridge to reopen.
This closure, the second this month, will allow construction workers to replace the 640-foot-long approach span that connects the floating bridge’s east end to the Kitsap County side.
The bridge is expected to reopen at 4 a.m. Thursday.
In the meantime, Kiewit-General Construction will roll off the old span and roll on a new prefabricated section at a speed of 5 feet per hour.
To help travelers get to the Kitsap Peninsula and points east, the Aqua Express ferry will take foot passengers for free from the Port Ludlow Marina to the Kingston Marina.
A ticket from Port Ludlow will guarantee a seat on the return trip from Kingston.
The service is underwritten by several Ludlow and Jefferson County businesses and organizations.
