A Port Angeles business is voluntarily recalling 1,800 pounds of ground beef distributed to North Olympic Peninsula restaurants over possible E. coli contamination.
But much of the hamburger might have already been cooked and eaten, Evergreen Meats Inc. owner John Chiasson said Monday, the day the recall was announced.
The possible contamination was discovered by routine U.S. Department of Agriculture microbiological testing, department Food Safety and Inspection Service Administrator Thomas Billy said.
“Because of the potential hazard of food-borne illness from consumption of meat products contaminated with harmful bacteria such as E. coli, I urge consumers who have purchased the suspect product not to eat it and return it to the place of purchase,” Billy said.
“Consumers may wish to ask restaurants or places where they consume ground beef if the product or meal contains the recalled product.”
