Peninsula: Fog grounds planes, clouds horizons

Fog has been described as creeping in on little cat’s feet but it’s been more like a lion on the North Olympic Peninsula this week.

Severe fog on Monday and Tuesday grounded all but two of the 15 regularly scheduled roundtrip flights between William R. Fairchild International Airport and Seattle’s Boeing Field.

The horizon also was pea soup — visibility was reported at times to be about 150 feet — at Jefferson County International Airport in Port Townsend, keeping most private planes on the ground.

Landings and takeoffs are at the discretion of the pilots, a Port of Port Townsend spokeswoman said.

No regularly scheduled airline service flies out of the Port Townsend airport.

But in Port Angeles, San Juan Airlines offers nine daily flights to and from Seattle.

The airline reported one flight made it out of Fairchild on Monday, but the rest were canceled.

All flights through at least Tuesday afternoon also were canceled.

“There’s not much we can do about it. We can’t fly in it,” said a customer service representative.

“Boeing Field and the San Juans are open, it’s just that one problem child at Port Angeles.”

Only one arrival

Kenmore Air Express offers six daily roundtrip flights during the week and five on weekends.

The airline reported one flight arriving in Port Angeles on Monday morning, but the rest through at least Tuesday afternoon were canceled.

“So far we haven’t gone out today,” said a Kenmore representative.

“Most of our customers today have canceled and taken alternative transportation.”
