PORT ANGELES — In 1977, Karen McCormick joined First Federal Savings and Loan Association as a teller at the city’s eastside branch.
Thursday, as First Federal’s president and chief executive officer, McCormick was named one of the 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking by U.S. Banker magazine.
McCormick and the 24 others honored are featured in the magazine’s October issue.
Nominated by the group America’s Community Bankers, McCormick was one of 4,700 nominees nationwide.
“It’s a big surprise and a tremendous honor,” said McCormick, who as the 2003 president of the Thrift Institutions Advisory Council to the Federal Reserve Board has met for business dinners with Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan in Washington, D.C., over the past two years.
“Working with Alan Greenspan and the board of governors has been a tremendous experience,” said McCormick, who with her board of directors has led First Federal since 1997.
McCormick has one more meeting in December as chairman of the 12-member advisory board’s chair. She serves as the western region representative for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.
