New census figures show there are 192 same-sex couples living together on the North Olympic Peninsula.
The census data released late last week is the government’s first attempt to track same-sex couples.
The new census data show that one of every 87 couples living together in Jefferson County are the same sex. And in Clallam County, one of every 142 couples are of the same gender.
Statewide, the statistic is one of every 83 couple.
In Seattle, the percentage of same-sex households is much higher. One in every 21 couples living together there are of the same sex, census figures show.
While the census didn’t track information on sexual orientation, questions did ask about same-sex couples living together.
But census officials acknowledge some same-sex couples may not have answered census questions regarding their lifestyle.
Same-sex couples represent one of every 59 couples in Port Townsend.
The number is lower in Port Angeles with one of every 182 couples identifying themselves as sharing a household with a person of the same gender, census figures show.
