Peninsula election contests coming up

Filing week ends with several races

North Olympic Peninsula voters will find seven primary election contests on their ballots and several general election contests after candidates filed for offices in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Filing week ran from Monday to Friday. Contests with more than three candidates will be on the Aug. 1 primary election ballot with the top two vote-getters going on to the Nov. 7 general election. There are five primary contests in Clallam County and one in Jefferson County.

Primary contests

A primary contest has formed for the Position 6 seat on the Port Angeles City Council among incumbent Navarra Carr and candidates Jim Bennett, Nicholas Merrigan and Mark Karjalainen.

Filing for Position 3 for the Port Angeles School Board are Stan Williams, Nicole Woodhouse and Allie Plute.

The Sequim School District, which is primarily in Clallam County with a portion in Jefferson County, has three primary contests for the school board.

Position 1 incumbent Larry Jeffrys is challenged by Jim Shepherd and John Graham.

Position 4 incumbent Maren Halverson will face Derek Huntington and Dean Christain.

Position 5 incumbent Michael Rocha is challenged by Sandra Kellso and Hunter Gilliam.

A primary contest has shaped up for Position 3 on the Sequim Community Recreation Center (Clallam County Parks & Recreation District 1) among Jason Bushman, Dick Neal and Robert Kellso.

A primary race has formed in the Port Townsend School District for Position 2 among Harold Sherwood, Annie Bartos, and Simon Little.

There are 14 general election contests, those between only two candidates, on the Peninsula, nine in Clallam County and five in Jefferson County.

Clallam general

Clallam County Commissioner Mark Ozias, a Sequim Democrat, is challenged by Sequim Republican Stan McClain.

Port of Port Angeles Position 3 incumbent Connie Beauvais of Joyce faces Lee Whetham of Port Angeles.

Port Angeles City Council appointee Amy Miller will seek to retain the Position 5 seat against Jim Haguewood while Deputy Mayor Brendan Meyer will face Kalli Mae Jones for the Position 7 seat.

Vying for seats on the Sequim City Council are Position 1 incumbent William Armacost and Kathy Downer — who is now serving in the Positoin 2 seat — while Jim Black and Dan Butler have filed for Position 2 and Patrick Day and Harmony Rutter have filed for the Position 6 seat.

Amy Kitchel Ruble withdrew from the Forks Community Hospital (Clallam County Hospital District 1) commission race on Friday and filed the same day to run against incumbent Sandy Schrier for Position 4.

Cape Flattery School Board incumbent Don Baker will face Cathy Walde for Position 4.

Jefferson general

Port of Port Townsend incumbent Pam Petranek will face Chuck Fauls for the Position 1 seat.

Contests are set for two seats on the Port Townsend School District. Position 5 incumbent Nathanael O’Hara faces Timothy Hawley. Matt Klontz and Nancy Papsodora are vying for Position 3.

For the Quilcene School Board, Ron Frantz and Ronald Jones will vie for Position 1 now held by Trisha Freiberg and Anne Bessey and James Hodgson will compete for the Position 4 seat now held by Jeddica Gossette.
