PORT ANGELES — An event to help homeless veterans on the North Olympic Peninsula is planned for Thursday.
The event, known as the Stand Down, is organized by veterans with local and federal financial support.
The Stand Down Task Force, based in Port Angeles, hopes to the event will help homeless veterans and those in danger of becoming homeless to get services and financial aid they are entitled to.
“There are a number of services and funding available to veterans that they may not know is there,” said Dick Stumbaugh, veterans assistant for the Veterans Relief Fund and an organizer of the Stand Down.
“A lot of veterans have benefits coming to them; we want them to get the benefits they deserve.”
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Clallam County Fairgrounds.
Task force members estimate there are about 15,000 veterans living on the North Olympic Peninsula.
At any given time there can be as many as 200 homeless veterans or those on the brink of homelessness.
