Hundreds of Indians from the North Olympic Peninsula are preparing for this year’s Paddle Journey, which will travel from Clallam and Jefferson counties to Snohomish County.
Many First Nations tribes from British Columbia are already paddling to reach the end of the annual journey, which will be hosted by the Tulalip tribe at its reservation near Marysville on July 28.
The journey to the northeast from the Peninsula contrasts last year’s Paddle Journey, which began on central Puget Sound, paddled west along the perimeter of the North Olympic Peninsula, then south on the Pacific coast to Taholah in Grays Harbor County.
Journey organizers said they are expecting 50 to 80 canoes by the end of the journey.
