Peninsula Daily News staffers win eight regional newspaper awards

BELLEVUE — news staff members won eight awards Saturday during the 2003 Society of Professional Journlists Region 10 competition.

The awards were announced during the organization’s annual banquet. The newspaper competed against others with less than 25,000 circulation in the Pacific Northwest.

Local News Editor Roger Harnack won first place in science reporting for his story on the magnetic powered vehicle being developed by Port Angeles-based Magna Force.

Harnack won a third place award in the business reporting category for his story on Port Angeles being chosen by Westport Shipyard as home for its new yacht building factory.

Staff writer Luke Bogues and and former staffer Philip L. Watness won second place in spot news reporting for their story about waters subsiding on the Dungeness River following flooding in January of 2002. Watness is now a reporter with the weekly Port Townsend Leader.

Bogues was awarded honorable mention in the spot news category for his story about the successful search for a car missing in Lake Crescent in 1929. Reporter Brian Gawley covered many of the stories leading up to the discovery of the car.

News assistant Zeller Westabrook was awarded third place in food, fashion and home reporting for her story about various food uses for lavender.

Features Editor Laura Tucker won third place for arts coverage with her story in Peninsula Women on a woman who creates glass art.

Photographer Keith Thorpe won third place in general news photography for his picture entitled “Daddy’s Home.”

The newspaper was also given honorable mention for editorials.
