Peninsula College to receive award for innovations

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College will be one of two recipients of this year’s 2015 Energy/Facilities Connections Innovations Award through Washington State University’s Extension Energy Program.

The award will be presented at the annual Energy/Facilities Connections Conference on May 5-7 in Leavenworth.

Patty McCray-Roberts, director of support services, and JayDee Smith, auxiliary services manager, will accept the award on behalf of the college and speak about the project.

The regional award was created to encourage the sharing of innovations and best practices with regard to public facilities.

Peninsula College’s submittal concerned best practices and innovations related to custodial services and the development of a custodial master plan, as well as the results of that effort.

Peninsula College has replaced more than 75 percent — more than 160,000 square feet — of its total square footage in the past seven years.

At the same time, budget cuts meant it had to maintain about 50,000 additional square feet with four fewer custodians.

The custodial master plan was developed to help understand and calibrate workload and customer expectations.

The data helped in decisions about how much and which of its services the college would purchase to support teaching and learning.

It also established workload and performance expectations for the custodial crew and is used as a tool to communicate with customers, allowing for feedback and adjustments as needed.

The college’s work was previously recognized by inclusion in a presentation at the National Association of College Auxiliary Services conference.
