PORT ANGELES — Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island,” “Una Mas” by Kenny Dorham and the standard “Tangerine” are on the menu as the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble dishes up a free concert Thursday.
The concert will be at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater on the college’s campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.
The 11-piece outfit is composed of Peninsula College students and teachers such as saxophonists Kevin MacCartney, Andy Geiger and Steve Lingle, singer Stacy Hopkins; and flugelhorn players George Snyder and Joey Lazzaro.
College spokeswoman Phyllis Van Holland promised the ensemble will move across the jazz map, from Hancock’s fusion and Dorham’s Latin tune to Dizzy Gillespie, Wayne Shorter and Stevie Winwood.
The band boasts talented improvisers plus large horn and rhythm sections, she added.
Pianist and bandleader David Jones said the ensemble members range in age from “younger to older, with some in the middle.” All are enrolled students except him.
Filling out the ensemble are percussion man Jake Stickelmeyer, alto sax player Bob Bailey, clarinetist-saxman Caleb Johnson, trombonist Don Smaltz and bass player Mike Kochanek.
Thursday’s concert will run about two hours with an intermission, Jones said.
The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble gives about three concerts per quarter in and around Port Angeles.
