Peninsula College establishes scholarship honoring Jamye Wisecup

New fund aims to help those studying emergency management

PORT ANGELES — To honor the memory of a fixture in local and regional emergency preparedness efforts, Peninsula College has established a fund and scholarships for those interested in the field.

College officials announced last week the establishment of the Jamye Wisecup Memorial Scholarship/Program Endowment that will provide scholarships for the Homeland Security Emergency Management (HSEM) Certificate or Associates Degree program at the school.

A longtime emergency management planner for Clallam County, Wisecup died unexpectedly at the age of 64 after she collapsed at a presentation to the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce in September.

“Wisecup was a fixture and a bright light in the emergency management community, not only in Clallam County but around the state,” college officials noted in a press release issued Thursday.

“[She] was the heart and soul of emergency management in Clallam County and made an impact on many peoples’ lives. In addition to her work with emergency management, she served on numerous local non-profit boards and was active in many community activities … [and] her dedication to promote emergency preparedness and her genuine unconditional caring for everyone made her the exceptional woman that she was.”

To honor her memory, the Center of Excellence — Homeland Security Emergency Management is working with Peninsula College Foundation to establish the fund. Program support could be utilized for the HSEM Program, which is managed centrally at Pierce College in Lakewood for all seven of the HSEM programs (including Peninsula College).

About the fund

According to college officials, 100 percent of gifts/donations will go to the fund; the Peninsula College Foundation does not collect a gift fee.

The fund will support both student scholarships and program needs, they said.

If $30,000 or more is raised, the fund will be endowed and will provide an annual award in perpetuity, college officials said. If less than $30,000 is raised, annual awards will be made until the fund is depleted.
