A ban on open fires and smoking on public lands has been lifted for the Olympic Peninsula, fire officials announced Tuesday.
“Conditions on the Olympic Peninsula are wet enough now and the danger of human-caused fires is reduced, so we can now lift the ban on open fires,”‘ said Dale Hom, Olympic National Forest supervisor.
The ban has been in effect on state Department of Natural Resources, Olympic National Park and national forest lands since July 29 as fire officials faced a drier than usual summer. Park, state and forest officials may still need to reinstate a ban if the weather turns dry again, they said.
Hom said campers should still be careful to extinguish all fires before leaving campsites.
