The ports of Port Townsend and Port Angeles have completed their Coast Guard security assessments.
Installation of the security measures identified in the plans are on track for this summer, pending the necessary federal funding.
Port of Port Angeles Deputy Executive Director Dave Hagiwara said the Coast Guard hasn’t given a timeline for when the funds will become available, but they anticipate doing the work this summer.
Hagiwara is coordinating a group of public and private users that began meeting in February 2003 to identify potential dockside and perimeter security threats at ports from Port Ludlow to LaPush.
The group identified methods of protection — such as new harbor patrol boats and surveillance equipment — and the estimated costs of capital improvements.
The Port of Port Angeles plans to install fencing, lighting and other security measures at Marine Terminals 1 and 3 along Marine Drive where oil tankers arrive; The Landing mall on the Port Angeles waterfront; Port Angeles Boat Haven; and John Wayne Marina near Sequim.
