FORKS — A vampire ball this evening and a scavenger hunt Saturday in Forks will celebrate the just-after-midnight release tonight of the DVD of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”
The town is bracing for a host of fans, expecting the same rush of more than 600 that it had for the 2009 release of the DVD of “Twilight,” based on the first book in the series.
Walmart stores in Port Angeles and Sequim will be open at midnight to sell the DVD of the movie, which is based on the second book in Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling four-novel series set in Forks.
The Volturi Vampire Ball will begin at 8 tonight at the Twilight Lounge, 81 N. Forks Ave., said owner Annette Root, who owns Dazzled by Twilight souvenir shops in Forks and Port Angeles.
Twilight fan band Mitch Hansen will provide themed music for the ball, Root said.
Although formalwear is not a requirement, it is encouraged.
“I think it would be fantastic if most people dressed up,” Root said. “I’m going to.
“If someone wasn’t able to make it to their prom or something like that, this is a great chance to dress up and have fun with other fans.”
The party is free and no tickets are required, so Root said she had no count about how many people would attend.
A special edition of the DVD, made just for Forks, will be handed out at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, she said.
“We are expecting about the same or more as with the ‘Twilight’ release,” she said.
Although Dazzled by Twilight has a Port Angeles location, 135 E. First St., it will not be open for the event — allowing fans to focus on the Forks location, Root said.
Leppell’s Flowers and Gifts — also known as Twilight Central, 130 S. Spartan Ave. — also will open its doors at midnight to sell copies of the DVD, said owner Charlene Leppell.
A Twilight-themed scavenger hunt will kick off at about 3 p.m. Saturday.
“We want to make sure that in addition to the DVD there are some things for the fans to do the next day,” she said.
Both the Sequim and Port Angeles Walmarts will sell the DVD at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, said Scott Pope, company spokesman.
The Port Angeles Walmart, 3500 E. U.S. Highway 101, which usually closes at 10 p.m., will stay open for fans to buy the DVD, closing once sales stop.
The Sequim Walmart, 1284 W. Washington St., will open briefly at midnight for fans who want the DVD.
Walmart features a special edition of the DVD, which comes packaged with the Summit Entertainment documentary “Twilight in Forks — The Saga of a Real Town” featuring interviews with local characters and fans.
The Movie House, 612 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles — which was formerly Blockbuster — will stay open late to sell and rent the DVD.
