PORT ANGELES — A pedestrian was in serious condition Saturday at a Seattle hospital after he was hit by a flatbed truck on Front Street near Albert Street on Thursday night.
John P. Owens, 48, was taken to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles before he was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Port Angeles Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said Friday, adding that he did not know Owens’ hometown.
Upgraded condition
A Harborview spokesperson said Saturday morning that Owens was in serious condition, upgraded from Friday’s critical.
Police were called to the wreck on East Front Street between North Albert and North Francis streets at 9:17 p.m. Thursday, Smith said.
“Based on what we know right now” from witness reports, “it looks like a pedestrian ran out into traffic, crossed the first lane and was hit by a vehicle that was trying to avoid him” in the second lane, Smith said Friday.
Police think Owens was hit by a mirror on the truck, Smith added.
Traffic was reported as traveling at less than 35 mph down Front Street, Smith said.
No arrests were made.
Traffic was disrupted, and the road, U.S. 101 westbound, was intermittently closed past midnight, Smith said.
Name not released
The flatbed truck driver’s name was not released because the investigation is continuing, Smith said.
“At this time, there’s no evidence we’ll be pursuing charges, but we haven’t gotten all the reports back,” Smith said Saturday.
“We really need to complete our work.”
Investigation is expected to be finished this week.
The State Patrol assisted police.
