PORT ANGELES — An unidentified pedestrian walking in a crosswalk was hit and injured by a pickup at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at West Front and North Oak streets in downtown Port Angeles.
The name of the woman who was hit, and the driver of the vehicle that hit her, were not immediately available, said Port Angeles Police Officer Clay Rife, one of several officers on the scene.
The pedestrian, who had been walking on the south side of West Front, was crossing in the North Oak crosswalk when she was hit by the pickup turning left onto North Oak, witnesses said.
The woman, who appeared to be bleeding from the head, was taken by ambulance to the Olympic Medical Center emergency room.
One lane of West Front Street was closed for about 20 minutes while the injured woman was treated and the investigation was completed.
One witness, Jeremiah Cannon, 32, of Sequim, said that he had been driving in the right lane of West Front Street, a one-way westbound street, when a black Ford pickup truck in the left lane turned left on Oak, and he heard a “thump.”
“I looked left, and she was on the ground,” he said.
Police took a man into custody from the scene, but did not release his name or possible recommended charges.
Rife said that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision.
At least five people offered assistance to the injured pedestrian. They included Donovan Christie, 19, of Joyce, a volunteer firefighter who was walking through the area.
“There were a lot of people who stopped to help. It’s good to see,” Christie said.
Christie said the police response to the scene was very fast, two minutes or less.
Police are also looking for the woman’s dog.
The woman had been walking a dog, an Australian shepherd, when the collision happened, Rife said.
The dog ran away, and its location was unknown when the ambulance left.
