SEQUIM — An 88-year-old Sequim woman who was hit by a car last week when she walked across North Fifth Avenue while walking her dog has died.
Gloria Irwin died late Friday at Harborview Medical Center, Trooper Krista Hedstrom, State Patrol spokeswoman, confirmed Saturday.
Irwin was struck in a dark stretch on North Fifth Avenue just north of the Hendrickson Road intersection at 6:26 p.m. Thursday.
She was not in a crosswalk, and was wearing dark clothing, said State Patrol Sgt. Gailin Hester.
Her head smashed into the driver’s-side windshield of a 1997 Buick Century driven by Noreen S. Iliff, 58, of Sequim, who was not injured.
Irwin’s athletic shoes were knocked from her feet, one of them off the road.
A State Patrol trooper concluded after an investigation that the cause of the wreck was Irwin’s failure to use the intersection crosswalk about 30 feet south of where she was struck.
The motorist was not cited.
The case remains under investigation, Hester said Saturday.
Sequim Fire Department paramedics treated Irwin for a broken leg and head injuries before she was airlifted to Harborview.
Irwin was listed in serious condition in Harborview Medical Center’s intensive care unit Friday.
Sequim Police Chief Bill Dickinson said police called in the State Patrol to investigate because of the seriousness of the wreck.
Dickinson helped direct motorists away from the scene, which was blocked off to traffic north and south for more than an hour after the wreck.
Irwin’s dog was taken to a veterinarian, Hester said.
He did not know the condition of the dog.
