PORT ANGELES — Paving repairs will begin today on portions of South Race Street, West Fifth Street and Golf Course Road, Port Angeles public works officials said.
The $111,725 annual paving project, which the City Council awarded to a Poulsbo contractor Tuesday, includes repairs to a section of South Race Street between Park Avenue and Lauridsen Boulevard.
A water main break on Feb. 16 damaged the Race Street subsurface, and the road remains closed between Park Avenue and Lauridsen Boulevard. Other paving work in the contract includes asphalt patches to damaged sections of West Fifth Street between Cherry and Oak streets, and along Golf Course Road between Nancy Lane and Lindberg Road.
The work should be completed by March 26, but the schedule will depend on the weather, city officials said.
Traffic will be reduced to a single lane, and flaggers will direct vehicles through the affected areas.
The patchwork on Fifth Street and Golf Course Road is needed prior to summer chip sealing, Public Works and Utilities Director Thomas Hunter said in a council memo. The repairs to South Race Street are required as a foundation for a larger overhaul of Race Street that is set to begin this summer.
The City Council awarded a $111,725 contract to low-bidder Agate Asphalt of Poulsbo on Tuesday. The item was added to the council’s consent agenda.
Lakeside Industries of Port Angeles also submitted a bid. The engineer’s estimate was $165,480. Of the $111,725 total, $70,955 is for Golf Course Road, $28,465 is for Race Street and $12,305 is for West Fifth Street, according to a cost breakdown.
