PORT ANGELES — A panhandler is expected to be charged Thursday in Clallam County Superior Court after he allegedly pulled a knife on a man at the Safeway east of Port Angeles on Monday.

John Troberg, chief deputy Clallam County prosecuting attorney, said in a hearing Tuesday he expects to charge Daniel James Jackson, 61, of Greeley, Colo., with second-degree assault during a hearing set for 3 p.m. in Clallam County Superior Court.

Jackson remained in jail Tuesday with bail set at $5,000 by Superior Court Judge George Wood. He was taken into custody late Monday for investigation of robbery.

Jackson allegedly threatened a man after asking for money about 12:35 p.m. Monday outside the grocery store, which is located at 2709 E. U.S. Highway 101, according to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was visiting from Texas with his wife, and had stopped for lunch at the store with his father-in-law, a Bremerton resident.

After he went back inside for more napkins, Jackson again harassed the man, according to deputies.

When he told Jackson he did not have any money, the panhandler took out a knife and threatened him, deputies said.

The Bremerton man saw what was going on and shoved Jackson to the ground.

Jackson was taken to Olympic Medical Center Monday afternoon with face and head injuries. He has since been discharged.

The victims said Jackson was “quite aggressive in his requests for money,” deputies said.

Other witnesses reported that Jackson had been in the area all weekend and had harassed other customers, according to the release.

Anyone who witnessed the event or who has information about it is asked to contact Sgt. Eric Munger or Deputy Bill Cortani at 360-417-2459. If investigators are not in the office, callers are asked to leave a message.
