PORT ANGELES — Ediz Hook is a public treasure and access to it should not be restricted by a marina for multi-millionaires, the City Council was told at its Tuesday night meeting.
“Ediz Hook is priceless. It blows my mind that for a gated marina the city would surrender that,” said Port Angeles resident Pam Blakeman during the council meeting. “I’d love to know why.”
The proposed marina would house up to 57 boathouses to accommodate yachts between 80 feet and 120 feet and worth between $5 million and $15 million.
It would include two 25-foot piers, a seaplane dock and 6,000-square-foot Klallam tribal cultural center/museum.
The project would be located on 1,760 feet of property on the south side of Ediz Hook Road just west of the Puget Sound Pilots station near the entrance to the Coast Guard base.
The marina’s estimated price tag is $7 million. It would be financed by private backers working with the Lower Elwha tribe.
The project has received letters of support from the Port of Port Angeles, Platypus Marine and Westport Shipyard, among others.
Dick Goin, an expert on area fisheries, has criticized the project in interviews and meetings with city officials but Tuesday marked the first public opposition to the proposed project.
