OUTDOORS: Hurricane Ridge Poma lift operates today; first time in 2 years

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — The Poma lift is back in business atop Hurricane Ridge.

Skiers and snowboarders can access the north slope lift for the first time in two years when the Ridge opens today.

Hurricane Ridge Ski and Snowboard School head Lori Lynn Gray said the opening will be available to advanced skiers and snowboarders only.

“There’s enough snow to make it happen,” Gray said.

“But if you don’t know what you are doing, you probably shouldn’t ride it.”

The mountain didn’t receive enough snow for the Poma to open during the 2008-09 winter season.

But with more than 60 inches sitting on the Ridge as of Saturday, mountain manager Craig Hofer and his crew managed to get it up and running a week after Hurricane Ridge Road reopened.

The road had been closed for five weeks prior to last weekend after a mudslide took out 100 feet of road Jan. 18.

The bunny and intermediate rope tows will also be operating today.

Full day lift rates are $10 for the bunny lift, $20 for the bunny and intermediate lifts and $25 for all three, including the Poma.

Half days cost $10 for the bunny, $18 for the bunny and intermediate and $22 for all three.

Hurricane Ridge Ski and Snowboarding School will offer private lessons at $35 an hour.

Lessons will be limited to pairs of two in similar age and ability unless demand calls for larger groups (at a reduced price).

Spots must be requested in advance. To do so, call 360-452-6434.

Snacks and ski rentals are available at the snack bar and gift shop inside Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center.

Hurricane Ridge Road opens Fridays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to dusk, weather permitting.

Always check road and weather conditions before your trip by phoning the park’s 24-hour road conditions hotline at 360-565-3131.
