PORT TOWNSEND — Oscar fans gathered late Sunday afternoon to get ready for the year’s biggest film event, adding a level of flash and glitter to a windy afternoon.
More than 100 people crowded into a lavishly appointed American Legion Hall, each paying $40 to benefit the Port Townsend Film Institute with the purpose of bringing more film-related educational programs to Port Townsend.
This year’s event was the sixth annual local Oscar party, the second to be held in the Legion hall.
Called “The Envelope, Please,” it was presented by the Port Townsend Film Festival.
“This is a cool event because you can share the experience,” said film festival Executive Director Janette Force.
“Anyone can watch the Oscars at home, but if you are here, you can lean over and say to the person next to you ‘can you believe that dress?’”
Food and wine were served, and the Oscar telecast was projected on a giant screen.
During the frequent commercials, sponsors ran an auction, which also benefits the Film Institute.
Windy conditions made entering the hall difficult, forcing sponsors to weight down the red carpet with concrete posts, but those inside were transported into the world of film and were oblivious to the cold weather.
