PORT TOWNSEND — Vessel Assist of Port Hadlock worked Thursday to dislodge a boat from rocks after the small sloop anchored outside the Port Townsend Boat Haven washed ashore Wednesday.
The Halcyon, a 27-foot sailboat owned by Michael Clark of Seattle, landed on the beach next to the Larry Scott Memorial Trail after its anchor line broke.
Vessel Assist made one attempt to dislodge the boat from the rocks Thursday morning and was scheduled to make another attempt during the afternoon low tide, Clark said.
During the first attempt, the boat fell on its side and filled with water, Clark said.
“It could have been a lot worse,” Clark said. “There was no oil on the boat and no environmental damage, and the boat wasn’t that expensive.”
Clark said he bought the boat about six weeks ago for $1,500 and had yet to find a permanent mooring.
He said he did not know if there was any hull damage or if the boat was recoverable.
“If they can’t get the boat loose, the people at Vessel Assist can use this as a training exercise,” Clark said. “So there will be some good that comes out of this.”
