CLALLAM BAY — The Oregon Shadow Theatre will present “Thumbelina” at the Clallam Bay High School gymnasium Monday.
The free program will begin at 3 p.m. in the gym at 16933 state Highway 112.
Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen’s Thumbelina is a miniature girl born from a flower who has to find her own way in the world of nature.
Through the seasons of the year, she has adventures with frogs in a pond, flying beetles in a tree, a swallow in the woods, a mouse in a field and a mole in his underground home.
While the plot of the production follows Andersen’s story line, the script links music of the 1960s and ’70s to Thumbelina’s desire to find her home in a land of flowers.
Oregon Shadow Theatre, based in Portland, specializes in the art of shadow puppetry.
Their shadow plays have toured the United States and Canada, including performances at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and at theaters, schools and festivals from coast to coast.
The program is part of an ongoing partnership between the North Olympic Library System — which operates public libraries in Clallam Bay, Forks, Port Angeles and Sequim — and Cape Flattery School District’s Creating Opportunities for After School Thinking — or COAST — program.
Funded by a Department of Education 21st Century Learning Grant, COAST’s mission is to provide after-school enrichment activities for children.
