SEQUIM — Hand-dyed silk scarves, jewelry polished by the Pacific Ocean, conversation with local artists: This is the May Day Opulent Art Show.

Admission is free to the show and sale from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, the first day of May.

In this event, nine artists and three musicians, together covering the gamut of media and musical genres, will gather at the Lodge at Sherwood Village, 660 W. Evergreen Farm Way, just off North Fifth Avenue.

The Opulent Art Show promises a chance to meet a variety of creative people from Sequim and Port Angeles, said organizer Renne Brock-Richmond.

They include Mary Beth Beuke of West Coast Sea Glass, Jan and Kay Kepley of Natural Light Photography and glass artist Lizbeth Harper, as well as “Jazzy Judy” Clark, the singer who will step up at 6 p.m.

Following Clark will be Sequim Community Orchestra violist Lili Green and young violinist Kate Powers, winner of the Junior Young Artists Competition and a member of the Port Angeles Symphony. The pair will play at 7 p.m.

“We are really happy to have the music,” said Brock-Richmond, who’s been organizing Opulent Art Shows since 2008. The shows are put on by Brock-Richmond and the Burning Down the House collective, a group of artists who operate home-based businesses.

One-of-a-kind

The May Day sale will offer spring-themed gifts, from decorative floor cloths to one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces by Heidi Buessow, Joanna Hays, Paulette Hill and Jean Wyatt.

“It means a lot to me to support these artists,” Brock-Richmond said.

“I am grateful that they participate [in the show], where people can engage with them directly.”

The stories behind each art piece, she believes, add meaning and give the buyer of the piece a story to share in turn.

“It’s like a gift inside a gift,” Brock-Richmond said.
