One person flown to hospital after fire destroys trailer

SEQUIM — A person was airlifted to a Seattle hospital after a fifth-wheel trailer used as a primary residence became fully engulfed in flames.

The person, who was not identified by Clallam County Fire District 3 officials, was flown to Harborview Medical Center for burn treatment on Friday.

Fire consumed more than 75 percent of the trailer, fire district officials said.

Firefighters were dispatched about 12:05 p.m. Friday to the 1100 block of Taylor Cutoff Road for the structure fire. When they arrived, neighbors were tending to a person laying in the grass nearby, fire district officials said.

A paramedic initiated care and determined Life Flight would be needed to transport the person to a hospital, fire district officials said.

Firefighters began to knock down the flames and additional firefighters responded with another engine and a water tender. Eight volunteer firefighters, all of whom responded from home, provided support through scene control, staffing backup hand lines, firefighter rehab, investigation and cleanup, fire district officials said.

About 1,100 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire, officials said.

Olympic Ambulance and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife also provided assistance.

The fire remained under investigation. The 35-foot Kit Companion fifth wheel and its contents were determined to be a total loss, fire district officials said.
