SEQUIM — Images by Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans and many other renowned photographers have been brought together at the Museum & Arts Center, 175 W. Cedar St., for an unprecedented display beginning today.
In the Photography Collectors’ Show, visitors to the MAC can behold 50 photographs from the private collections of five local residents devoted to the fine art of photography.
Although the exhibit is on display beginning today, the opening reception will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday during the Sequim Art Walk.
Admission to the show is a suggested $2 donation for adults and free for children.
Staying on display through April 26 are fine art and documentary-style photographs by 45 photographers.
Famed photographers
They include Ruth Bernhard, Margaret Bourke-White, Paul Caponigro, Martha Casanave, Stephen Johnson, Andrés Kertész and Jacques Henri Lartigue, among other luminaries.
The images include a hand-colored forest scene by early 20th-century Pacific Northwest photographer Darius Kinsey, images of the Great Depression by John Vachon and Evans, and a black-and-white photograph of Hadrian’s Wall taken in the 1860s.
A few other highlights: “Borscht,” a vintage photogravure by Bourke-White; “Bayou Cypress, Winter,” Jenny Ellerbe’s image in carbon ink on kozo paper; and Caponigro’s “Stonehenge.”
Also in the show are pictures made by Ted Orland, John Sexton, Aaron Siskind, Jerry Uelsmann, Al Weber and John Wimberley.
These photos come from the collections of Robert Schlecter, who coordinated the show; Ernst-Ulrich Schafer, a portrait photographer in Port Angeles; DJ Bassett, a photographer and the museum’s executive director; photographer Charlotte Watts; and Sequim resident Conn O’Neil.
Unique exhibit
“The varied group of photographers and subject matter makes this a one-of-a-kind photographic exhibit of the highest caliber,” Schlechter said.
“Thanks to the amazing generosity of a handful of individual collectors, we are able to share these remarkable works with the general public.”
The MAC is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.
