Olympic National Park: First “open house” on management plan

PORT ANGELES — The future of Olympic National Park was the subject of an open house Monday night at Vern Burton Community Center.

More than 30 people turned out for the session — the first of eight such meetings scheduled this week on the Olympic Peninsula and in Seattle.

“This is just an open house. There is no formal presentation,”‘ Olympic National Park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said. “We wanted to focus on hearing from the public.”

The open house had five stations for the public to comment on five general topics — natural resources, amenities, education, wilderness and cultural resources.

Management plan

Olympic National Park and National Park Service officials are working on a general management plan to guide the park for the next 20 years, Maynes said.

The National Park Service Olympic General Management Plan has been several years in the making, she said.

The public input period ends this month.

Maynes said two more rounds of public meetings will be scheduled.

Written comments may be sent to OLYM_gmp@nps.gov or to Superintendent, Olympic National Park, 600 East Park Ave., Port Angeles, Wash. 98362.
