Olympic Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council meets Friday

Gathering slated in La Push

LA PUSH — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council will meet Friday.

The meeting will be from 9:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Quileute Tribal Council-West Wing, 90 Main St. in La Push. Public comment will be open at 12:15 p.m. and 3:05 p.m.

Items on the agenda include 2020 priorities for the sanctuary; the state’s new National Maritime Heritage Area; Quillayute River habitat restoration; sea otters, sea lions and seals; the West Coast Recreation Fisheries Engagement Plan; and the Marine Biodiversity Observing Network.

The council is made up of 21 representatives from local and regional organizations and agencies whose role is to advise the sanctuary superintendent on matters of policy and in reviewing strategic plans.

Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary is administered by NOAA and was designated in 1994 as the first national marine sanctuary in the Pacific Northwest. It encompasses about 3,200 square miles off the Washington coast, extending from Cape Flattery to the mouth of the Copalis River.
