PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Discovery Trail between North Francis Street and City Pier is expected to reopen Wednesday or Thursday, as soon as Port Angeles city crews can clear the rocks, mud and about 30 trees left by a landslide.
The trail — known as The Waterfront Trail inside Port Angeles — was closed when a hillside between City Pier and North Francis Street gave way Sunday afternoon.
Cory Delicat, director of the Port Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, said the city is checking to make sure the rain-soaked area is stable.
“As of Monday morning, it was not moving,” he said.
However, he said, winds or additional rain could delay the work if there are more slides or falling debris.
The trail traces a path along the bottom of the bluffs that parallel Port Angeles Harbor. It often experiences small landslides during winter months.
Joggers and bikers can detour around the slide via North Francis, Front and Lincoln streets.
No other significant landslides have been reported in Clallam and Jefferson counties.
The National Weather Service said recent heavy rainfall created a landslide risk throughout Western Washington.
Coastal bluffs and hillsides are the most susceptible because they have been saturated.
