PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary has named nine new members for its advisory council, which provides sanctuary staff with input and recommendations on programs and management.

Four of the new members are primary members. Five are alternates.

“We are impressed with the expertise each new member brings and extremely pleased that have agreed to serve on the council,” sanctuary Superintendent Carol Bernthal said in a statement.

Jan Newton and Tom Mumford were appointed as primary and alternate members, respectively, for the research seat.

Jody Kennedy and Cpt. Les Bolten are the primary and alternate members for the Chamber of Commerce, tourism and recreation seat.

Sandra Brooke and Lora Leschner are the primary and alternate members for the conservation seat.

John Veentjer and Frank Holmes were appointed as primary and alternate members for the marine business, ports and industry seat.

Brian Santman was appointed as alternate member for the commercial fishing seat.

The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council consists of 10 governmental, seven nongovernment and four tribal representatives.

Members of the volunteer council serve three-year terms.

The sanctuary is administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA.

It covers 3,189 square miles off the Washington Coast from Cape Flattery to the mouth of the Copalis River.
