PORT ANGELES — Volunteers can register now to train as docents at the Olympic Coast Discovery Center operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary.
A once-weekly training for new volunteer docents will begin Tuesday for five consecutive weeks.
Training is free at The Landing mall, Suite 206, 115 E. Railroad Ave., but registration is required.
Training topics will include sanctuary ecosystems and wildlife, marine research and deep sea corals, current marine issues, maritime heritage, communicating with the public and more.
Two of the six training sessions are field trips to Neah Bay and Salt Creek Reserve.
The training times and dates are from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 25, May 2, May 9 and May 16; full-day field trip, May 23; and half-day field trip, May 26.
The Olympic Coast Discovery Center is an interpretive visitor center designed to provide information about the sanctuary’s natural and cultural resources and programs. Docents typically volunteer from two to four hours per week.

The Olympic Coast Discovery Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to the public free of charge from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and remains open on weekends only from September through mid-October.
