PORT ANGELES — The state Department of Transportation plans to remove the old U.S. Highway 101 bridge across the Elwha River beginning July 15.
The bridge, which was being undermined by the river after the removal of the Glines Canyon and Elwha dams, was replaced by a new bridge, which opened to traffic on July 22, 2024.
The old bridge has remained on site until now because its removal must be done during a fish widow from July 15 through Aug. 30, according to Mark Krulish, a spokesperson for WSDOT.
The work is expected to be complete by the end of the window, Krulish said.
Krulish also said the work should not significantly interfere with Highway 101 traffic since, “we will only need to use flaggers for a few minutes at a time when trucks enter and exit the work zone.”
