PORT ANGELES — The Polar Pioneer oil rig, which is headed for Port Angeles Harbor, was near the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca on Tuesday afternoon.
The 355-foot-tall oil drilling platform was headed east at over 6 knots.
The floating platform’s tugs, Ocean Wind and Ocean Wave, were expected to arrive with the platform sometime after 2 a.m. today, according to a vessel tracking website, www.marinetraffic.com.
Polar Pioneer left Dutch Harbor, Alaska, behind the two tugs Oct. 13.
Its journey has already been in the news.
A Polar Pioneer support vessel, the 270-foot Tor Viking II, rescued French sailor Manu Wattecamps-Etienne and his cat, Pipalup, from a sinking sailboat in high seas about 350 miles southeast of Dutch Harbor on Oct. 20.
Tor Viking II is scheduled to arrive late Saturday.
The oil rig was previously anchored in Port Angeles Harbor from April 17 to May 14.
