RADAR, KRISTINE FAIRBANKS’ K-9 partner, will be among the 50 to 100 K-9 officers and their handlers expected at Monday’s memorial service.
Radar was locked in her vehicle when she was killed. He was unharmed.
Brandan Schulze, Forest Service spokesman, said the dogs will be walked in together at the beginning of the ceremony and lined up behind the stage.
Out of concern that they may not be able to handle such a large crowd, the dogs will be removed from Civic Field during the service.
Schulze said that Radar is being cared for by a Port Angeles police officer designated by Fairbanks for that purpose.
It is not yet known whether Radar will be retired from police work, he said.
There is concern that the police dog may be traumatized by Fairbanks’ death.
“It’s like losing a parent to that animal,” he said.
