SEQUIM — In spite of the cancer in his lungs and liver, in spite of the chemotherapy that wracked his body, Geoff Hollister plans on going to the U.S. Olympic trials next month.
They’re to start June 27 in his hometown of Eugene, Ore., a long day’s drive from Hollister’s house on Sequim Bay.
So really, Hollister has to go, especially since he has something new to bring: Out of Nowhere: The Inside Story of How Nike Marketed the Culture of Running.
Hollister was the third person hired by Phil Knight in the early 1970s to introduce athletes to shoes bearing a swoosh.
Both Knight and Hollister started out selling Nike gear from the backs of their cars. They also gave away shoes to young runners in whom they detected the spark of greatness.
Together with legendary University of Oregon coach Bill Bowerman, they laid the waffle-soled groundwork for a multibillion-dollar empire.
Hollister, who built a home in Sequim about 10 years ago, will discuss his new book tonight at 7 at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
The free event will start with a 20-minute talk, and then Hollister will take questions.
