Odd-couple-like fathers star in Key City Public Theatre show Sunday

PORT TOWNSEND — Key City Public Theatre’s “Rounding Third” isn’t just about baseball.

Yes, the characters are Little League fathers: Michael (Scott Nollette) and Don (Kenn Mann) are dads with conflicting views about the game.

But their story, to take the stage at the Alchemy Bistro & Wine Bar, 842 Washington St., at 6 p.m. Sunday, peeks inside other questions.

“Rounding” will explore a variety of human foibles and quirks, said director Patricia Earnest.

Key City Public Theatre will present “Rounding” just once.

Tickets are $48 including a four-course dinner, with proceeds to benefit the nonprofit theater company’s community programs, plays and musicals.

Odd couple

In this play by Richard Dresser, Don and Michael are an on-field odd couple navigating with their team through a rocky Little League season.

Don, whose son is the star pitcher, believes in winning at all costs, while Michael, whose son can’t hit, run, catch or throw, thinks the team should just have fun.

“The journey into peeling back the layers of these two characters to reveal their humanity is where [Dresser] takes the audience into some new and very well-written territory,” Nollette said.

Dresser’s plays are known for diving into everyday life to search for moral guidance — always with a strong dose of humor, Key City Artistic Director Denise Winter added.

In the end, she said, Don’s and Michael’s contrasting philosophies give way to the crux of the play: How should we raise our children?

Dresser, Key City Public Theatre’s guest artist for the spring 2014 PlayFest, is a prolific writer of plays and television series.

His 2002 comedy “Rounding Third” is one of his most successful and enjoyed runs in Chicago, San Diego and off-Broadway in New York City, among other venues.
