PORT ANGELES — A Jeep Grand Cherokee’s occupants were mostly unharmed after the vehicle struck and killed three elk that were in the road late Saturday night on U.S. Highway 101.
A couple from Kelso and their dog were returning home from Cape Flattery, driving east at milepost 238, when the wreck happened, according to a Clallam County Fire District No. 2 press release.
The three elk came onto the roadway in front of the vehicle.
The couple was treated at the scene just west of the Elwha River and the dog was unharmed.
The Jeep hit all three elk, with one coming part way into the Jeep through the windshield, leaving a piece of antler in the front seat area.
The driver had minor cuts and the passenger had broken glass from the windshield all over her front side, according to the press release.
The three elk died and were picked up by three different people who intended to harvest the meat.
The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Elwha Police Department, Washington State Patrol and Medic 81 assisted at the scene.
