Memorials and observances are scheduled across the North Olympic Peninsula today in observance of the fifth anniversary of the terrorists attacks on Sept. 11, 2001:
* In Sequim, a U.S. flag will be presented to Dungeness Courte Alzheimer’s Center in gratitude for care packages assembled at the center for troops in Iraq.
The presentation at the center, 551 Garry Oak Drive, will be at 11:15 a.m.
The flag is a gesture of thanks from a general whose soldiers received the care packages. The flag was flown at his camp in Iraq on July 4.
Dungeness Court has prepared a special display case for the flag.
* The Port of Angels Barbershop Chorus will perform patriotic songs at the public safety monument during a 9/11 observance event from noon to 12:30 p.m.
The event will be at the Francis Street Waterfront Park at the north end of Francis Street in Port Angeles.
The event is also expected to feature speeches by Clallam County Sheriff Joe Martin, Port Angeles Fire Chief Dan McKeen and Port Angeles Police Chief Tom Riepe.

* The Marine Corps League and VFW Post 1024 and Ladies Auxiliary plan a memorial service at Veterans Park in Port Angeles at 1 p.m. today.
Speakers are expected to include VFW post commander Bill Minor, VFW Auxiliary president Lindy Meeks, Police Chief Tom Riepe and city Fire Chief Daniel McKeen, according to Venay Money, district president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Chaplain R.P. Wilson will provide the prayer. The ceremony will end with taps played by Dan Gregory.
Eleven flags will line the walkway to symbolize the day of the terrorist attacks, and the bell will be rung five times, once for each year since the attacks, said Money.
* Fairview Elementary School, 166 Lake Farm Road, Port Angeles, will host a short Patriot’s Day Assembly in front of the school’s bell tower at 11 a.m. today.
Students and staff have asked several organizations to participate, including the State Patrol, Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Port Angeles City Police, Coast Guard, Clallam County Fire District No. 3 and the Marines.
